Whether you’re stopping for a few tapas or sitting down for a proper meal, these simple tips will help you feel more at ease when dining out in Spain:

  • Eat later than you’re used to. Lunch usually starts around 2:00 pm, and dinner rarely before 9:00 pm.
  • Trust a crowd. A busy restaurant is often a good sign. An empty one at peak hours, less so.
  • Sharing is essential. Tapas and small plates are meant to go in the middle and be shared by everyone.
  • Slow down. Meals aren’t rushed. Lingering at the table for hours, especially at lunch, is completely normal.
  • Don’t be shy in tapas bars. They can get crowded and lively. Squeezing in at the counter and rubbing elbows with others is expected.
  • Bread comes standard. Olive oil or butter usually needs to be requested.
  • Order coffee your way. From café solo to café con leche, there’s a name for every style. Be sure to specify your favorite!
  • Coffee comes last. It’s typically served after dessert. Ask your waiter if you’d like them served together.
  • Reserve ahead. Weekends and holidays fill up fast.
  • Ask for the check. Servers won’t bring it until you do.
  • Tipping is optional. It’s appreciated, but never required.
